Building A Rugged Wind Turbine Tower With Free Materials

My neighbor Chris came over to help me build the wind turbine tower. I already has most of the necessary hardware to put up the wind turbine so we got started on the job.

I am building a wind turbine tower from scratch using recycled materials and TSC hardware. The frame of my wind turbine tower comes from commercial shelving units. These are the sides to the heavy duty commercial shelving that you see in the lumber yards and warehouses.

I was given enough of these shelving sides to put up a wind turbine tower about 60 feet high. For now though I plan to get my wind turbine up about 32 feet high. In summer I plan to put in footings and build the full size tower. But for now with the frozen ground and low funds I am just getting up a temporary tower which will provide me some power through the winter.

It was a relatively warm day at about 29 degrees F and sunny so it felt even warmer. This made the job go well.

Chris and I got the four tower sides put together in a square form that stands 12 feet high.

Next we connected four of the tower pieces laying down as a sort of outrigger. These are stabilizers which will help support the tower in strong winds and keep it from tipping over.

I hope for now to have one or two sections of tower up and then a water pipe on that to hold my wind turbine.

We decided that we needed washers to make this stronger and keep the bolts secured better. We headed off to TSC to get the necessary hardware.

By the time we got back though the sun had gone down and it was just too cold to continue to work. We decided to call it a day.

Hopefully I can get the wind turbine up and running soon. It will be easy to finish now.
