Finishing Tiny House Wood Stove Heat Shielding And Test Burn O21

Part two of installing the tiny house wood stove heat shielding. John finally got the OSB trimmed back safely and I finally got the homemade heat shielding finished. We mounted the entire contraption on the wood stove and tried it out.

A friend from church built me a kindling wood box out in the forest using wood pallets. He put out some more pallets for me to stack wood on. Then he raised one of the chicken coops off the ground some so it will not be bothered by the winter snow and weather. He also water proofed the roof of the new chicken coop so I can use it.

John did an awesome job of cutting the OSB without cutting through the metal roof above it. He even managed to cut without touching the tar paper and rosin paper, which he had to cut out with a knife.

Now there are no flammable materials near the wood stove pipe.

I finished making my heat shield for the stove pipe. This is a set of two 8 inch pipes cut in half. Then the halves bolted together to make a long heat shield. This fits perfectly on the stove pipe.

I bolted the heat shield to the stove pipe using plumbers strapping and bolts. This suspends the heat shield about an inch away from the wood stove pipe.

John and I had to work together to get the stove pipe back in place. It was heavy and awkward. But we finally got it up there.

Next I lit a fire in the wood stove and we sat back to enjoy the results of our labor. The wood stove burns well. The heat shield is doing its job.

I used the digital thermometer to check temperatures all around the wood stove and the walls. Everything is working well. The walls are cool and at room temperature. The stove pipe is about 260 degrees on average and the heat shield is about 100 to 150 degrees. The wall behind it is cool.

John even demonstrated that he can hold his hand on the stove heat shield with no discomfort. Although he would be immediately burnt if he touched the stove pipe itself.

This was a success and a very good day.
