Started Installing Chicken Fence Around The Meadow

I started to install the chicken fence around the entire perimeter of the meadow and into the woods about 150 feet on both sides. This will give Joy my dog and my chickens lots of room to run, play and eat stuff in the wild.

The chickens will pretty much be fully free ranging most of the year with this much space to run in.

Joy will be able to run the entire area and feel free as a dog can be. She will be protected by the fence and then electric fence that will be outside that.

I had to clear out a path through the trees and move rocks, mud, branches, fallen trees and other debris first in order to get started on the fence.

I am putting up about 1200 feet or so of chicken wire. This extends about 350 feet along the back of the house and into the woods on both sides. Then goes parallel with the meadow and meets up again on the other side.

This will give my animals about 2 or 3 acres of space to run free in.

After clearing out the debris behind the house I started to nail on the chicken wire to the trees. I started on the side of the driveway and worked back behind the house. I was running out of daylight and the mosquitoes were getting merciless so I quit about halfway through the 150 foot long roll of wire. The wire is 6 feet high and should be enough to keep my chickens inside and most predators out. Again the electric fence will keep any tougher and more determined predators away.

This is a very exciting moment for the off grid homestead. Not only will the chickens and my dog be free but also I will have a tick free zone. The chickens eat literally anything that moves and they can fit into their mouths or break up with their beaks. Even mice if they can catch one.

Thank you all for being there. Thank you to those who helped make this happen. And thank you all for watching.
