The Tiny Off Grid Hunting Shack On Wheels

Minutes after my arrival back at The Off Grid Project, my friend Kentwood arrived with his car for hunting this week. Since I have 56 acres to work and play in and he is from the city, he comes up to visit during hunting season each year.

I brought back my muzzleloader from Michigan on the return trip from visiting my family for Thanksgiving. Muzzle Loading season begins in a few days and I hope to get a deer or two for my larder.

Kentwood and I headed right out into the woods to see if we can get some food for the table.

The tiny house on wheels is not a tiny hunting shack on wheels for the next week as we roam the woods looking for some deer.

There are a couple reasons I hunt. I cannot afford to buy meat in New York for one thing. The meat in the grocery store is sometimes processed and sometimes contains harmful or unhealthy chemicals or medications that were used when raising the animal. Also the nice red color you get in the store is generally not natural. Meat turns brown naturally unless you put something on it to maintain that pretty red color you see.

Another reason I hunt is that in most, but not all, farms the animals are not raised in a humane or healthy way. There are free range organic farms but the price is out of reach for me. By purchasing the meat from standard farms you are sort of promoting this method in a way.

Many people feel that hunting is evil or bad in some way but if you eat meat then you cannot say this. It is cleaner and more humane than beheading a caged animal.

These are my own opinions anyway.

In the afternoon I tossed the dutch oven on the wood stove with some vegetables and deer roast that Paul from Pennsylvania gave me on my visit. The food cooked so well that the roast was falling apart with a fork. The meat was melting in our mouths. It was an awesome hunters meal after a cold day out in the woods.

Thank you Paul.
