Rebuilding A Weed Trimmer Carb & Fuel Line Replacement
I bought a weed eater last weekend at a garage sale for only $3. Of course it was cheap for a reason. It would not stay running. So I figured a carburetor rebuild was in order. When I opened it up I also discovered that the fuel lines were all shot as well and needed replacing.
I first removed the weed eater carburetor and then opened it all up to clean it out. But when I had it open on the bench, I noticed that it was totally clean and shiny inside like brand new.
A fuel line did break while I was removing the weed wacker carb though so I realized that this was probably the original problem why it would not stay running and would not idle at all. The engine was sucking air in with the fuel and could not get enough fuel to stay running.
So a trip into town later and I had two feet of new fuel line.
This was the challenging part. All of the fuel line needed replacing and was rotted. I am happy that I got two feet of it because I ended up using it all in the end.
The hardest part of all was putting a new fuel line in the gas tank. I had to remove the shroud of the weed trimmer and then remove the carburetor mount on front of the engine in order to remove the fuel tank.
The fuel line entered the tank from the bottom and then attached to a fuel filter inside. This was quite a challenge getting the new line attached to the filter inside the gas tank. Eventually I got it by just putting it together outside the gas tank and feeding it through from the inside out. This is not perfect but it will hopefully work.
I had to now reassemble the entire weed eater engine.
Next, before I put the air filter and cover in place, I wanted to give it a test run to make sure that it would run and that there were no fuel leaks.
I pulled the starter and it fired right up. It also idled nicely for the first time - success.
I finished putting the weed wacker together and then gave it a real workout in the grass. It is holding up well and there are no gas leaks.
So now I have an $8 week trimmer. With the original $3 price and about $5 in gas lines I have a working gas powered weed eater.
