Vandalism & Damage & The Off Grid Homestead

I returned to the off grid homestead to find some damage done to my chicken coop and the perimeter fence. I immediately called the police to file a proper report which I will turn into the insurance.

One entire wall of the chicken range was flattened to the ground. About 150 feet of fence was laid flat, allowing the chickens to run free. All the large and the small bantams were out running around.

Both chicken runs were opened on one side. Even the fence line up to the house was flattened.

My first thought was a bear. But then I found that the perimeter fence was also flattened pretty badly and my screen tent was slashed.

I called the police so I could file a proper report and turn this into my insurance.

Chris was a witness and was kind enough to talk to the police for me. He said that it had happened on Friday night. Saturday he patched up the chicken fence a bit to try and contain the chickens.

But Saturday when I got home the fence had fallen back apart, allowing some of the chickens back out.

The birds had destroyed my garden harvest. Chickens will make quick work of a garden if they get out.

After the police left Chris and I discovered some tire tracks out in the back side of the property, by the workshop camper. These look like bike or dirt bike tracks.

The police had said that it looked like vandalism when he saw the slashed tent and the flattened perimeter fence. The chicken wire had been smashed down from the top along a wide range of the fence line.

I will turn in all the damages to my insurance. When I get the money from the insurance I will replace the damaged fencing and move on.

This is life at the off grid homestead. It is never boring. If something gets damaged you fix it and move on.

I am only saddened by the loss of my favorite two Bantam chickens. I also lost some of the larger chickens. I am quite sure it was raccoons because I found some feathers out on the side yard. You can tell when a coon eats a chicken.
