Melanie & I On A Survival Training Mission
Melanie and I went out into the mountains for a survival training trip. The idea was to test out our gear and see what we may need to change. Our backpacks are set up for long term survival in case we have to leave home in a hurry on foot.
We have had a wild fire just a mile from our home the last couple days for example which may cause us to be evacuated in a hurry. You would not have time to go back into your home and pack some gear if this happened.
Natural disasters and also man made disasters can cause you to need to leave home in a hurry.
Melanie and I want to be prepared for any situation.
So we packed our gear and went off into the mountains for the weekend. Since this was Melanie's first trip out and my first this year, we only did one over night stay in the mountains.
We took a topographic map of the area we wanted to hike through and mapped out our camp location before we even left home.
When we got to the area, we followed some foot trails until we found the pond that I had wanted to use as a water source.
We then looked around off trail for a good location for our camp. This was about ten minutes hike off trail away from the pond.
After dropping off our gear at the base camp we then went to the pond to clear off the muck and scum from the surface. Later we went back after the filth settled and filtered some water into our bottles to take back to camp.
We then boiled the water twice to be extra safe because the water was still green after filtering it with the Sawyer mini filter. This filter is supposed to be good for about 100,000 gallons of water but it does not take out the algae from the water.
We used the water that evening for cooking our dinner and for coffee. It was about the worst coffee I ever had but it was better than nothing.
We used the TomTop camp stove for cooking our meal and the SilverFire Scout wood gassifier stove for heating our coffee water.
Later we made our bed and shelter using my old military rain poncho and Melanie's new poncho as shelter. A tarp was the ground sheet. Two old military foam mats went down next. Then my old sleeping bag was opened up and placed on the bottom. Melanie's sleeping bag was used like a comforter on top.
