Huge Lumber Haul & Building Chicken Run
This day was mostly spent hauling wood for the tiny house on wheels. I found a demolition site where I can get all the free lumber I need to finish construction of the tiny house.
There is a construction site about 10 miles away from the off grid homestead. I simply drove in and asked if I could take the wood. Most contractors have to pay to dispose of old construction materials and would be happy to have you take it all away for them. This was the same case here.
The only catch is that I have to take it all. I have to take all the wood away from the site. There is some bad wood along with the good.
I picked up the first truck load right away. I got some thin 1/8th inch plywood which will be perfect to finish the tiny house walls and ceiling. I plan to sand the plywood and then put thin trim boards vertically every few inches to make it look like board and batten.
The ceiling I can finish in the same way.
I also have a lot of painted wood siding. This is 3/4 inch board and batten look plywood siding. It is painted blue right now. I am not sure if I should put it directly on the tiny house as it, strip it and refinish it, or put it on and oil it.
There are piles of 2x6 rafters waiting for me to pick up as well. These will be perfect for my green house along with all the matching windows I am going to get.
There is a lot of oak flooring at the demo site as well. It will take me many truck loads to get it all out of there but I will do it.
This job will provide me with enough materials to finish the off grid tiny house on wheels.
Of course with recycled wood, it will take a lot of work to prepare the lumber but in the end it will be very much worth the trouble.
When I got back and emptied the truck, Melanie and I opened up a package that came in the mail. We got some fine gardening tools. Thank you very much :)
Later in the afternoon I started to build a larger chicken run for the bantam chickens. I hope to give them a larger area to play in that is still light weight and movable.
In the evening we drove to another job site with the same contractor to pick up a truck load of fine oak flooring. This is very nice flooring which the contractor had said was a shame to throw away. So he let us pick through and take what we wanted.
