24. Ancient Greece Civilization: Dyeing and Fashion - Culture, Purpose, Knowledge, and More
1 year ago
28
In ancient Greece, dyeing was a well-developed industry, with many different colors and techniques used to dye fabrics. Purple dye, made from the murex sea snail, was highly prized and reserved for the upper classes. Other popular colors included red, blue, and yellow. Clothing was made from a variety of materials, including wool, linen, and silk. Fashion in ancient Greece was heavily influenced by the ideals of beauty and proportion in classical art. Men typically wore a simple tunic (the chiton) and a cloak (the himation), while women wore a longer tunic (the peplos) and a veil. Both men and women also wore sandals and various types of jewelry.
