“A Pledge To Liberty”: The Story of William Anderson Pledger
William Anderson Pledger was an editor, political leader, and civil rights activist, born in Georgia. He attended Atlanta University and is credited as the first African American Lawyer in Atlanta. He owned and edited a series of newspapers where he invoked the Winchester as the optimal tool against the mob.
He was known for fighting against lynching. And once led armed blacks to the Athens jail and successfully defied a mob determined to lynch two prisoners.
Unhappy with his stance and political leanings on a Republican platform his employment was threatened and he was accused of “indoctrinating ‘radicalism’ into the negros heads.”
