Many people say they fall asleep more easily when listening to the sound of water, whether it be the slow ebb and flow of waves on a beach, the uneven rumble of a creek in the distance, or the gentle patter of rain on the window. Obviously, several scientists have wondered what the reason for this would be, and several studies have already been done on the subject.

The answer lies in the way our brains interpret what we hear, both while we're awake and after falling asleep. Throughout our cognitive development, we begin to identify certain sounds as indicative of threats or something that needs immediate attention, such as a sudden scream or a siren, for example.
Likewise, other noises give us the feeling that everything is safe and that we can relax, as is the case with the sound of water. According to Orfeu Buxton, associate professor of biobehavioral health at Pennsylvania State University, in the USA, "these slow, hissing noises are non-threatening sounds and therefore serve to calm people down." "It's like they're saying 'don't worry, don't worry,'"
