Numbers 1-2 | There Are So Many Israelites

The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it describes the journey of the Israelites from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. Chapters 1 and 2 provide a detailed account of the census taken of the Israelites at the beginning of their journey.

In Chapter 1 God commands Moses to take a census of all the Israelite men who are 20 years old and above, who are able to serve in the army. Moses and Aaron, along with the leaders of each tribe, count the men and record their numbers. The total number of men is 603,550.

Chapter 2 describes the arrangement of the Israelite camp during their journey. God instructs Moses to arrange the tribes in a specific order around the Tabernacle, which is the central point of the camp. The tribe of Judah is to camp on the east side, with Issachar and Zebulun next to them. The tribes of Reuben, Simeon, and Gad are to camp on the south side. The tribes of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin are to camp on the west side, with Dan, Asher, and Naphtali next to them. The Levites, who are responsible for the Tabernacle and its services, are to camp around it.

The large number of people counted in the census described in Numbers 1 is indeed a testament to how God kept his covenant promise to Abraham. In Genesis 12, God promises Abraham that he will make him into a great nation, bless him, and make his name great. This promise is reaffirmed in Genesis 15, where God tells Abraham that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky.

By the time of the census in Numbers 1, the Israelites have become a great multitude, numbering over 600,000 men who were eligible to serve in the army. This number does not include women, children, and elderly men who were not counted. If we estimate that there were at least two women and two children per man, the total number of Israelites could have been over 2 million people.

Such a large number of people would have been impossible to sustain and maintain in the desert without divine intervention. Yet, throughout their journey, God provided for the Israelites by providing them with food, water, and protection. The fact that the Israelites were able to survive and thrive in such harsh conditions is a testament to God's faithfulness in keeping his covenant promise to Abraham.

Furthermore, the large number of Israelites is significant because it fulfills God's promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. The fact that God kept his promise to Abraham, despite the challenges and obstacles that the Israelites faced, demonstrates his faithfulness and the power of his covenant promises.
