Deforestation alerts set record for February —and the month isn't over yet.
February is not yet finished and deforestation alerts in the Legal Amazon have already hit a record for the month. The data, released by the Institute of Space Research (Inpe) on Friday, 24, show that 209 square kilometers (km²) were deforested by February 17 - the largest mark for the month in the entire historical series, which began in 2015. Inpe provides data from the previous week on Fridays. The february figures will be closed next week on March 3.
