What Are The Benefits of Sulforaphane for the Human Body?

Sulforaphane is the active ingredient in Broccoli sprouts that acts as a detoxifying agent for PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and other cancer causing toxins.

Sulforaphane is an inducer of chemopreventative enzymes via Keap1-Nrf2 signaling. Sulforaphane is present naturally in widely consumed vegetables and has a particularly high concentration in broccoli

The Keap1-Nrf2 pathway is the major regulator of cytoprotective responses to oxidative and electrophilic stress. Nrf2 triggers the signaling pathways to prevent cancer initiation and progression in normal and premalignant tissues. In fully malignant cells, Nrf2 activity provides growth advantage by increasing cancer chemoresistance and enhancing tumor cell growth.

In human colon carcinoma cells (HT29) cells, sulforaphane at 15 μM inhibited cell growth and induced cell death. Sulforaphane induced a cell cycle arrest in a dose-dependent manner, followed by cell death. Sulforaphane induced cell cycle arrested in G2 -M Phase, which was correlated with increased expression of cyclins A and B1. Sulforaphane increased expression of the proapoptotic protein bax, the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the cytosol, and the proteolytic cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase.

Sulforaphane is found in higher concentrations in broccoli seeds than in broccoli sprouts by approximately DOUBLE the amount you will find in broccoli sprouts.

Sulforaphane targets certain tissues, such as the prostate, breast, and bladder, where it exerts pharmacological effects that provide protection against cancer. In particular, sulforaphane promotes the activity of Nrf2, a transcription factor that regulates the expression of more than 200 cytoprotective enzymes. But the cytoprotective effects of sulforaphane may backfire in existing cancers, providing protection to mutant cells. In this clip, Dr. Jed Fahey describes sulforaphane's opposing effects on cancer.

Can you get sulforaphane by eating raw broccoli seeds? Yes, you can; but it does not taste good. Therefore it is better to ingest it in the form of water soluble softgels or pills.

You can find it here on Amazon as well as on many other sites such as Swanson's Vitamins.
