LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Hello there my guitarist friend! I hope you're having a great week so far. :)
A few videos ago I explained the theory of the altered scale and showed how to work on practicing altered scales all over the guitar.
It's always a great idea to practice improvising in every position when learning a new scale type (which I demonstrated with the five altered scale forms in that video).
But to go from being able to improvise with a single scale type to being able to switch to it in the middle of playing real music is a HUGE challenge.
It's the next natural step to work towards, but it's not at all an easy step.
Practicing the altered scale is a great example of this because it's usually only appropriate to use it in real chord progressions for a measure or so at a time—that’s how altered chords tend to show up.
In this lesson I teach a few specific ways to work on switching scales mid-playing.
I demonstrate these exercises using the altered scale—with some clear graphics so you can follow along—but the same approach works for any key and scale changes that you might need to navigate while improvising.
