“Commanding Respect”: A Story of The Commandos

In October of 1966, the exclusively male security unit known as the Commandos were formed. Dressed in their black berets, boots and sweatshirts with the word “Commando” they encountered hostile and violent counter demonstrators during protests.

They were the most effective social service organization in Milwaukee for nearly a decade, providing youth counseling, jobs for ex-offenders, foster homes, and more. But soon they started taking government grants and contracts which James Groppi tried to warn them about. Eventually they went out of business under Ronald Reagan budget cuts.
