Building A Greenhouse To Extend Our Homestead Growing Season

I have a bunch of wood from earlier when I hauled it for the chicken coop build. Some of the wood is good for chicken coop siding and some is being saved for other projects.

I am sorting through all my wood into various piles based on the projects I have waiting. There is wood for bird houses, some for shelves inside the tiny house, some for the greenhouse and more.

Some of the wood is still wet even after laying out all this time. So I am laying that out in the open air while we have sun this week.

I am building a greenhouse where we will keep our garden vegetables and herbs through the year. I hope to keep some of the plants all year.

The walls are going to be 5 feet high on the sides and the roof will peak at 8 feet in the middle.

It is very slow going though because I have to sort out every single board as I work.

I managed to get the four walls up pretty smoothly.

Then it was time to work out the roof. I am making this up as I go along because I am using scrap lumber. I am sort of letting the lumber lead the project.

I ended up with a 12 foot beam across the top and three posts supporting it to the ground. This beam will hold the weight of the roof and transfer the winter snow load directly to the earth. This will keep most of the weight off the walls themselves.

By the time I got two rafters cut and in place I was exhausted and figured it was time to clean up before I hurt myself. I have to re cut the angles in the rafters anyway due to adding the beam.
