Melanie & I Put Tar Paper On Greenhouse & First Windows In

Melanie and I worked together to get the tar paper on the outside of the new off grid winter greenhouse we are building. Then I started installing the windows.

I could not put the long strips of tar paper on the greenhouse alone so I asked Melanie to help me. She did a good job helping too and even wanted to try out the staple gun.

When we got all the larger sheets of tar paper on the new greenhouse then I was able to scrap in all the little pieces myself.

This took me quite a long time though and it was getting dark by the time I was finished.

I pushed further and got a window installed. I could not rest without having at least one window in the new greenhouse.

Again, I will explain that this is a winter greenhouse. Up here in the North we get very harsh and cold winters. An all glass greenhouse loses too much heat during the cold nights. So in Northern climates we insulate the North walls which do not get direct sunlight anyway. This slows down the heat loss in the greenhouse at night.

The windows are facing fully into the South for maximum sunlight during the long winter months when the sun is lower in the sky. During summer most of the plants will be grown outside anyway but the clear PVC roof will allow summer sunlight to enter the greenhouse.

In summer we can grow plants that do not grow well in full sunlight and heat such as lettuce and wild garlic which grows wild around here.

I will insulate the North walls and half of the sides. Then I will have a wood stove with a built in water boiler to heat water tanks. This will radiate heat back into the greenhouse all night.
