Homestead Garden Updates ~ Road Trip ~ Catch Of The Day

A walk through our garden in the morning after we finish our work. Road trip to Alpena on the great Lakes. And a good catch for the day.

We are getting up and working early these days due to the extreme heat. It gets up in the 90s almost every day now so we have to use the morning hours to get anything done outside.

Melanie and I are also now watering the garden every day to increase our yield.

I raked the last garden plot out and then we planted our sprouted plants.

One plant, buckwheat, will certainly do well. We should expect a good harvest from the buckwheat because it is a fast growing crop. I read online that 100 sq feet of buckwheat should give us a nice harvest. That would mean one of my rows at 4 feet wide by about 25 feet long. I think I will till another row and see what we get.

We hope to become self sufficient one day and providing all of our own food is the biggest part of it.

I may set up a hoop house over the corn later in the season to extend our growing time. We had a few bad starts due to ground squirrels destroying our seedlings.

Melanie and I had to go to Alpena for some paperwork so we made a nice day of it while there.

We walked on the beach of Lake Huron. The water is so clean and clear.

We picked up some driftwood on the beach. We plan to use it for crafting back home. Both of us has our own ideas how to use it.

I plan to laser engrave images into the wood for sale on our Recycled Pallet Wood Products website.

Later on the way home we dropped a fishing line into Thunder Bay River and I caught one of the largest perch I ever saw. We took it home for dinner.

Our chickens stay outside every day now so that they can get grass and bugs. This offsets our food costs while the birds are growing.

I will be putting the small meat birds in with the larger ones this week. They are getting strong enough to run with the big boys now.
