Water baptism was by John for the Jews as a sign of repentance and readiness for the coming messiah who will baptize with The Spirit(John 1:33). After Pentecost, while speaking to the centurion Cornelius, all who heard the gospel received the Spirit and spoke in tongues while prophesying(Acts 10:44-46)

Water baptism has no place in the modern church and has been a “stumbling block” for many new and weak in faith believers and is best left back with John. Peter and Paul both regretted doing so(1st Corinthians 1:13-17, 1st Peter 3:20-22)
