The United States Department of Defense (DoD) has identified China's Dong Feng-17 (DF-17) hypersonic glide vehicle as a major threat to US military installations and fleets in the Western Pacific. According to the recent Pentagon report on China's Military Power, the DF-17 is intended to attack foreign military targets and is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear payloads. The report, released on November 29th, states that the DF-17 has already been deployed operationally and that it may be equipped with nuclear warheads. The DF-17's high speed and camouflage capabilities make it difficult to detect and defend against, and it has the potential to penetrate regional US missile defenses.
