Do ghostly children frolic around this old railroad tunnel in Rockbridge County, Virginia?

Popularly-known as "Poor House Tunnel," this stone-arch tunnel under the abandoned Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between Lexington and Staunton, Virginia has become a magnet for local folklore. It was built in 1932, only 10 years before the rail line was abandoned. Few motorists have any reason to traverse this stretch of Poor House Road, save for widespread rumors of ghostly activity. Most accounts center around two adolescent girls said to frolic in the nearby woods. Others have heard strange voices echoing through the tunnel, distinct from the gurgling stream that runs through it. Poorhouse Road once ran past the site of the former Rockbridge County Poor Farm, but its superintendent's house is the only remaining structure. It's unclear what role this proximity plays in the legends. #Virginia #rockbridgecounty #haunted #urbanlegends
