On Parliament Hill, Liberal MP Vance Badawey (Niagara Centre, Ontario) is joined by U.S. representatives Debbie Dingell (Michigan's 6th district) and Mike Gallagher (Wisconsin's 8th district) to call on the Canadian government to fulfil its $1 billion-commitment to protect freshwater systems. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the pledge during the 2021 federal election campaign. Also taking part in the news conference are Reeve Bert Liverance (mayor of Archipelago, Ont.), Bob Lambe (executive secretary of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission), and environmental policy expert Cam Davis, who served as U.S. President Barack Obama's "Great Lakes czar." The Great Lakes water quality agreement between Canada and the United States marked its 50th anniversary in 2022.
