White Dwarf Binaries

White dwarf stars are dense stellar remnants that can orbit very close to other stars. Sometimes they siphon matter from their companion. The buildup of this matter can trigger a nova explosion on the surface of the white dwarf, releasing a ton of energy. These novas can happen repeatedly over a long period of time. The buildup may also cause a Type Ia supernova, which is a much larger explosion that completely destroys the white dwarf.
