Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise reunited at this year’s Oscar nominees luncheon, where the blockbuster filmmaker praised his “Minority Report” and “War of the Worlds” actor for saving the theatrical movie business with “Top Gun: Maverick.” Both Spielberg and Cruise are in the running for best picture this year thanks to “The Fabelmans” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” respectively.

“You saved Hollywood’s ass and you might have saved theatrical distribution,” Spielberg said to Cruise in a video originally shared on Instagram by director Kartiki Gonsalves, whose film “Who Can Say No to Baby Elephants!” is nominated for best documentary short film. Cruise was left blushing.

Spielberg added, “Seriously, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ might have saved the entire theatrical industry.”

This year more than ever, the 95th Oscars luncheon, the annual gathering celebrating the nominees for the year’s Academy Awards, was a staggering success. It was reportedly the largest turnout in history! Tom Cruise, as usual, stole the show in a dapper suit, and Brenden Fraser looked his charming best. Michelle Yeoh, well, she shone. Others who attended the luncheon included Steven Spielberg, Angela Bassett, Colin Farrell, Ke Huy Quan, Alexander Bulkley, Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson and Gary Ungar to name some.
