Why Star Trek Discovery is no longer on Netflix

On November 18th, the fourth season of Star Trek Discovery premiered in North America and handful of other markets around the world, but hardly else. As it turned out, Netflix, the international distributor of Star Trek Discovery’s first three seasons, would not be releasing season 4. Not only that, the first three seasons disappeared from Netflix.

The entertainment media complex described this as something of a victory, as if Star Trek Discovery had been “reclaimed” by Paramount Plus. As we shall see, that was pure spin.

We will begin by going through the flaws in the claim that “buying out Netflix” was somehow a win for Paramount Plus, before breaking down how despite appearances to the contrary, Netflix allegedly were the ones who managed to get out of their Star Trek Discovery commitments; and finally, the machinations behind how season 4 ended up released for free on Pluto TV internationally.
