August of 1987 saw the release of the feature film, “Masters of the Universe”. It may be regarded as a cult classic today, but upon release the only way to regard it was as a critical and commercial failure; one that nearly brought He-man owner Mattel to its knees, and which in many ways, marked the final end for the He-Man brand in the eighties.

Continuing from our earlier retrospectives detailing the rise and fall of He-Man and The Masters of the Universe in both toys and animation, we will in this retrospective of the movie itself explore how it came to be, the financial state of the companies involved when different key decisions were made; what role it had in the demise of the He-man brand in the eighties, and it’s legacy...
