"Secretly," written by Al Hoffman, Dick Manning and Mark Markwell, was Jimmie Rodgers' (not to be confused with Jimmie Rodgers & the Rainbow Ranch Boys) fourth top 10 hit landing at the no.3 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958 (Whitburn, 1994, 2013) and no. 5 on the Top Country Best Sellers'' chart (Whitburn, 1994). "In 1967 [Rodgers] was stopped by an off-duty Los Angeles police officer, and in an incident marred by conflicting reports (he said he was attacked and beaten by the police, they said he was drunk and fell down) he sustained severe injuries to his head that left him with brain and nerve damage. He sued the City of Los Angeles and, despite their claims of innocence, they settled out of court for $200,000" (imdb, 2023). Rodgers amassed 14 gold singles and 4 gold albums (imdb, 2023). He died of kidney disease on Jan. 18, 2021 at the age of 87 (Billboard, 2021).

Lyrics:

Why must I meet you in a secret rendezvous?
Why must we steal away to steal a kiss or two?
Why must we wait to do the things we want to do?
Why, oh, why, oh, why, oh, why, oh why?

Wish we didn't have to meet secretly
Wish we didn't have to kiss secretly
Wish we didn't have to be afraid
To show the world that we're in love

Till we have the right to meet openly
Till we have the right to kiss openly
We'll just have to be content to be in love secretly

Why, oh, why, oh, why, oh, why, oh why?

Wish we didn't have to meet secretly
Wish we didn't have to kiss secretly
Wish we didn't have to be afraid
To show the world that we're in love

Till we have the right to meet openly
Till we have the right to kiss openly
We'll just have to be content to be in love secretly
