According to the British Ministry of Defence, Russia’s offensive has led to the highest rate of casualties since the first few weeks of the war. Russia was taking four times the reported casualties that they took in June and July. They added that while they could not verify Ukrainian methodology as they count Russian casualties, the trend lines were correct.

According to the ISW, the Ukrainian Intelligence Directorate and Russian Milbloggers were seeing the same picture –“that Russia does not have the resources necessary to launch a large-scale offensive operation on February 24 to coincide with the anniversary of Russia’s 2022 invasion.”

Prigozhin’s prestige is flagging. While Wagner has continued to have some limited success, taking Krasna Hora most recently, Ukraine has demonstrated that they were unwilling to relinquish the city.

Moreover, Prigozhin has been cut off from recruiting prisoners despite Moscow’s desperate need for manpower. He denied criticizing the Russian military, though he clearly has. Most recently, “Prigozhin forecasted that it would take Russian forces up to two years to reach the Donetsk Oblast administrative borders and three years to advance to the Dnipro River from the east.”

In Russia, Ordinary Russians feel the effects of the war, but they stubbornly refuse to blame Putin. A steady diet of Russian talking points, and the boogey-man of the West, and a profound apathy keep them towing the party line. Some fully subscribed to the propaganda. One woman interviewed by the BBC said, “Ukraine is a Western puppet and the West has always wanted to destroy Russia. Hitler wanted to grab our land. Who doesn't? We have such an enormous country.”
Her neighbor said, “I don't believe I can influence the situation. I understand which country I'm living in and what the authorities have done to prevent ordinary people from expressing their opinions. Any such expression is dangerous.” For both reasons, it seemed highly unlikely that the Russian people posed any meaningful threat to Putin.
