Gymnopédie No.1 - Erik Satie (Midnight Piano) Micah Bratt

Erik Satie, a French composer and pianist, was born in Honfleur on May 17, 1866 and passed away in Paris on July 1, 1925. He first started composing music in 1884 and from that point on, he signed his name as Erik Satie. In 1887, Satie was introduced as a "gymnopedist" and shortly thereafter, wrote his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. He later referred to himself as a "phonometrograph" or "phonometrician", meaning someone who measures sounds, as he felt this title better suited him than being called a musician.

Satie was a distinctive figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde and was a forerunner to movements such as minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. The Gymnopédies, which he published starting in 1888, consist of three piano pieces that are known for their atmospheric quality and gentle yet quirky style. Written in 3/4 time, these pieces share a common structure and theme and are considered to be the predecessors of modern ambient music.
