Dan Durston of Durston Gear: How the X-Mid Was Born & What Else Is Coming...

On this episode of The Cottage Corner, we are joined by Dan Durston of Durston Gear to learn a bit more about him, the company he has built, and some of the great gear that we have come to love. Join in and ask your questions.

We discussed some of his experiences thru-hiking the PCT and his yo-yo of the Continental Divide Trail, how he comes up with some of his design ideas, how the X-mid idea came to be, how he was able to get that design into production, how he has dealt with the growing demand as well as all of the supply chain challenges, his new projects including the new Kakwa 55, his new idea for a free-standing tent, and his interest in getting into sleeping pads, and at the end, he graciously answers a few questions from the audience.

Dan is continually pushing the limits of outdoor adventure. His travels include hiking the 2600 mile Pacific Crest Trail (2014) and the first yo-yo of Canada’s Great Divide Trail (1100km x 2, 2017) along with his wife T, who also helps with Durston gear. Dan also held the Fastest Known Time on the 90 km Stein Traverse (19 hours) and is the 5x fastest finisher in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Open (~100-mile off-season traverse of the Montana Rockies). Prior to starting his own company, he worked as a gear tester and ambassador for several other gear brands, reviewed gear for Backpackinglight.com, and established remote off-trail hiking/scrambling routes.

With Durston gear, Dan combines his comprehensive technical knowledge with extensive field experience to design the highest performance ultralight equipment. His designs achieve this through extensive thought about how to solve real-world problems using a first principles design philosophy. With the core idea developed, we work with top outdoor gear factories to produce the highest quality gear.
