Today host Sarah Abo became overwhelmed with emotion while interviewing a Syrian man involved in rescue efforts after two earthquakes devastated the region.

Local authorities said the death toll from the catastrophic events has passed 20,000 with 3,317 confirmed dead in Syria and at least 17,406 killed in Turkey.

That number is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. 

Syrian-born journalist Abo, who joined hosting the Today desk only a few weeks ago, led the interview on Friday with Ismail Alabdullah – a member of a volunteer organisation known as the White Helmets.
