10 years to the day after Fredrick Douglas escaped slavery, he wrote a letter to his former master - Thomas Auld. He spelled out the terribleness of slavery but ended on a personal and friendly note. The lesson from black history is that you can have incredible political divides but still be personal and even friendly. No divide can be greater than a slave and their slave-owner.
