The Kern County Board of Supervisors has declared February "Safely Surrendered Baby Awareness Month." The Safe Surrender law allows a parent to give their baby to a hospital or fire department within 72 hours of giving birth instead of abandoning them. California's Safe Surrender law has reduced infant deaths from abandonment in the state by 80 percent.
