I Bowled only 15 games cuz the bowling alley had a bowling tournament for kids & there were many people there so I had to wait on other bowlers.
I was having trouble with my thumb fitting the ball & the thumb tape I was using.
my league average is only a 160. I think i have the RIGHT tape now? its called weight lifting thumb hook tape that has adhesive that resits sweat & rosin. it does feel really sticky & some of the reviews on it say some people don't like it because it leaves that sticky stuff residue on your hand or thumb, others swear by it & say how well it does stick & how they don't have any problem with the tape sweating off the tape or the rosin drying off the tape. I replaced my thumb tape 9 times out of the 15 games every so often I am trying different tapes & different ways of taping my thumb.
With a straight ball or throwing a str8 ball (the reason you WANT to throw a str8 ball is so oil or dry lanes NEVER matter) the hook ball has a 4 times GREATER chance of striking, YES its a fact BUT you must change the way you throw your ball & where on the lane to lay the ball down with lots of loft to no loft at all.
with the str8 ball none of that matters also it does NOT matter what the ball is made out of. the weight does matter as with the hook ball it does but not as much. what the weight does is apply more force to have more pin action & carry, YES.
HERE is the reason a hook ball has 4 times the striking ability: a hook ball is NOT a str8 line from the foul line to the pins. it changes its direction do to roll, spin or revs once it gets out of the oil that can be withing 15' of the pins or 45 foot oil patterns. another thing with the hook ball is: it really depends on side roll of the spin of the ball. to throw a str8 ball with your hooking ball it MUST end over end to the pins. that is with ZERO side roll verses end over end. heheheheHA I did practice this & its a pain to throw it with a true end over end. I can only do it good with a light ball around 6 to 8lbs. even then I'm not as accrete with it as a str8 ball no where NEAR as accrete.
I do not like cross alley pick ups. my belief is to be on the board the pin you want to hit. if trying to pick up a 10 or 7 pin you should be within a couple boards of that pin so within the first or last 5 boards of those pins not a foot over or over 10" or boards. because then you must take angle in to account so it goes from your normal release to an angled one.
