A misanthrope is a person who harbours strong feelings of dislike, distrust, or hatred towards humankind. Misanthropy is a disposition characterised by a general cynicism, contempt, or disbelief in the human race and its behaviours. Misanthropes often view human beings as being selfish, cruel, and lacking in compassion, and they may feel that society and social norms are inherently flawed. Misanthropes tend to be solitary and avoid social interaction, as they believe that human relationships are fraught with disappointment. They may also hold negative views towards organised religion, politics, and the government, viewing these institutions as corrupt and ineffectual. Some misanthropes may also hold nihilistic or existential beliefs, believing that life has no meaning and that the world is an inherently unfair and unjust place. Some people may experience misanthropy as a result of traumatic life events or disappointment with humanity, while others may simply be naturally inclined to hold negative views towards their fellow man.
