Truthfulness Should BE Dependable

Have you ever been in a situation where you tell someone something and they make you swear to ensure you are telling the truth? James reminds us that we should not swear an oath using God’s name in vain. The truth is, we should have credibility in our actions and what we say. We should be able to give our word and that is good enough. If you find yourself always having to give additional assurance that you will keep your word, you should evaluate why and try to course correct it. God deserves our reverence and respect, so we should never use Him or the kingdom of heaven to convince people we are truthful. The consequence of doing that is this, if we do not follow through, then God becomes the one who punishes. There are several Old and New Testament scripture that speak of oaths, God Himself made oaths to His people. James is not saying that an oath is bad, what he is saying be wise in how you would make one. If we live a righteous life, then our word should be good and when our word is good, then we are living a righteous life!
