Chicken tractors are designed to be lightweight and portable so you can move them regularly throughout your pastures as part of a rotational grazing plan. We knew as we were building this thing that it was going to be very heavy. However it only needed to move about 8ft at a time, so what’s the big deal?

Moving it from the yard (where we built it) to the field for the first time the little rope I was using for a handle broke. Uh oh. I’ll be replacing that with a bigger, beefier rope, but for the immediate situation I had to do something.

My dad would’ve told me to “work smarter, not harder.” Maybe I could’ve placed a set of hand trucks at the front of the tractor and used them to slowly maneuver the structure into the field. Instead I chose the He-Man approach: find a grabbing point, lift the front of the tractor up, and drag it to its destination.

Lessons learned: Don’t be dumb / treating your body like a rented mule is a good way to put your family in a bad spot if things go south. Don’t overbuild things that are supposed to be lightweight.
And always remember to lift with your legs.
