Finland invents the FAIRY

Twitch your nose and make a wish, because it turns out fairies are real, and they’ve been invented in Finland. Or make that FAIRY – which apparently stands for ‘Flying Aero-robot based on lIght-Responsive materials assemblY.’ Setting aside the awfully forced acronym, this artificial fairy is a tiny robot made from even tinier bristles that can fly when exposed to light. The bristly wings provide enough drag to stabilize it in flight, while the light response lets the scientists control take off and landing using, well, light. It looks a bit like a dandelion seed crossed with a fairy.

So, what does one use an artificial fairy for? The researchers hope that they can scale up the FAIRY, from its current 4mm wingspan to 10cm, which will allow it to deliver very very tiny things, like GPS trackers or pollen, just in case something happens to all the bees. As one of the boffins, Dr Hao Zeng put it, this fairy is ‘superior to its natural counterparts.’ What.
