Demonstration of a flintlock musket, using real black powder. (Uberti replica of the Brown Bess, used extensively in the Revolutionary War by both sides.
Save yourself the trouble of "Grandstanding" in the comments section. I know that it's supposedly safer to use the half-cock when loading, both the flintlock and the caplock rifles. I find most of these rifles or muskets difficult to manipulate in this way with my large hands; the cock is just in the way. On my own range with the firearm pointed down range, I sometimes violate this rule. I know it's especially important on a range with other shooters and especially at a re-enactment.
