🎖 Servicemen of Russian Group of Forces in Syria honour Hero of Russia Roman Filipov

The 5th anniversary of the tragic death of the Hero of Russia Major Roman Filipov was commemorated at Hmeimim Air Base.

◽️ After the moment of silence, the Command of the Russian Group of Forces laid flowers to the memorial busts of the Heroes who lost their lives while operating in the Syrian Arab Republic, including the immortalised in bronze sculptural portrait of Roman Filipov.

On 3 February 2018, the Su-25SM ground-attack fighter, operated by Roman Filipov, was returning to the base, and was shot down by terrorists from a man-portable anti-aircraft system. The pilot tried to keep the airplane in flight, guiding it away from residential buildings, and ejected. He was encircled by militants on the ground, conducted an unequal battle against the enemy, became severely injured, and, when the enemy forces approached him at minimum distance, exploded himself with a grenade, shouting 'This is for our guys!'.
