Rockhounding in New Zealand for basalt agates - Oxford, North Canterbury

Most agates in Canterbury are formed in rhyolite or andesite but there are a few places where they are formed in basalt formations. These are much more rare and usually have very interesting mineral inclusions and sprays.

I had explored this little stream before and found one agate with amazing mineral inclusions and even some form of metal in it!
