Humiliated by his foster brother Hindley (Hugh Williams), Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier) becomes a wealthy man and seeks revenge. At the same time, however, the rebel harbors a great passion for Cathy (Merle Oberon), the sister of the man he wants to kill and who, during the years he was away from England, married the noble Edgar (David Niven). One day, Mr. Earnshaw returns from the town, bringing with him the little orphan named Heathcliff. However, Earnshaw's son, Hindley, is jealous of the boy, while Catherine, his daughter, becomes the childhood crush and soon the love of Heathcliff. Things change when the boys' parents die, and Heathcliff begins to be treated as a mere employee.
