Sam and Emma speak with Ken Klippenstein, an investigative reporter at the Intercept, to discuss his coverage of the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland for his newsletter on SubStack. Ken Klippenstein then joins as he gets right into parsing through the weirdest takes on the Davos conference in Switzerland, from the “everything they say is right” to the “actually, they’re eating babies there,” before walking through how the conference sets up the appropriate networking opportunities to keep the world economies in line with the neoliberal model, espousing the inflation-blaming and anti-worker rhetoric that has dominated the US economic policy over Biden’s reign as a bellwether for the rest of the West ™. After briefly touching on the conference’s meaningless panel on quiet quitting, Ken, Emma, and Sam walk through Chris Coons’ role as a protectionist dove during a conversation about bringing jobs back to the Americas, exploring what “friend-shoring” entails and why it would be good for way more than just the US. Wrapping up the interview Ken takes on the ingratiation of two horrendous political actors (Henry Kissinger and Saudi Arabia) at the conference, and what that says about who Davos is for.

A pleasure to welcome back to the program Ken Klippenstein. He's an investigative journalist with the intercept and also the proprietor of his self-titled sub stack. Yeah. At Ken dot Klippenstein dot sub stack. Right, is that Ken? That's correct. Okay, Self-titled albums are usually the best ones, right? Eponymous. That's right. eponymous is what we call it there. Thank you. So Can you just get back from Davos? It got my speaking fee. I'm in my nice office now. so I'm ready to go. What's great about the food? You know it wasn't up to snuff but looked the other way this time. So you did a couple of reports from there. One of them being the five creepiest moments at Davos. Maybe let's go through those moments. But I also want to get a broader sense of what was happening there. Have you been there before? No, I have not. And I actually wasn't there this time to be clear. but the differentiating factors actually watched a lot of these panels which to my astonishment nobody really does. And sort of my reason for following these things for having this masochistic streak to wanna watch these panels in full was the fact that there's so much speculation around what it is. and frankly, a lot of really fanciful ideas let's say. Around what takes place at these things. I mean I saw this whole false dichotomy of on the one side there is this kind of fever dreams, particularly on the far right that you know they're eating babies. or that and this isn't a joke. There was actually a Twitter user who posted a video of a bunch of Matrix movie-style baby incubator pods that Davos was apparently producing and preparing for the rest of the world. so that's obviously not true. That's not happening. But then on the other side, there's a sort of counter-response to that which is to say oh anything critical of Davos or skeptical of it that's a conspiracy theory. And that's not really true either. It's correct what Davos is doing. You know, it's this event in the Swiss Alps at a ski resort where a bunch of CEOs of Fortune 400 Fortune 500 companies and Central Bankers heads of state economic ministers come together and kind of discuss their sort of macroeconomic plans for the future.
