The Man Who Inspired Scream | The Gainesville Ripper

Hello, and welcome to the channel.

"What's your favourite scary movie?"

Unless you explicitly avoid horror movies entirely, you'll no doubt know this iconic question was first asked to Drew Barrymore's character Casey Becker, in the 1996 horror movie Scream.

The film not only introduced 90s teenagers to the now resurrected slasher genre, it also gave birth to a short-lived wave of horror films that looked to de-construct tropes and provide the audience with a meta-commentary of the genre they were watching.

With the 5th instalment having recently released to cinemas this month, Proper Horrorshow, Haryan Glaeddyv and I have been reviewing the previous films, and we’ve recently covered the latest instalment to the franchise over on Proper Horrorshow's channel. However, here I wanted to do something a little different.

While looking into the history surrounding the Scream franchise, I learned that Scream was inspired by actual events that took place back in Gainesville, Florida back in 1990.

So today, we'll be deep diving into a spree of murders that happened over 1 weekend, and examining the events that had students living in a constant state of fear as a result.

Let's begin.
