The Best Ever Sushi Recipe in Japan

Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish that typically consists of vinegared rice combined with seafood, vegetables, and sometimes tropical fruits. The most common sushi is makizushi, which is a roll typically filled with fish and vegetables, wrapped in seaweed and sliced into bite-size pieces. There are many different types of sushi, and it can be enjoyed in various ways, as sushi rolls, sushi bowls, or sushi platters with different toppings.

Here's a recipe for making a classic sushi roll:

Ingredients:

2 cups of sushi rice
2 cups of water
2 tablespoons of rice vinegar
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
6 sheets of nori seaweed
Filling of your choice (such as cooked fish, vegetables, or tofu)
Instructions:

Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and cover, simmer for about 18-20 minutes or until the water is fully absorbed.
In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt, heat it over low heat until the sugar and salt are dissolved.
Once the rice is done, take off the heat, pour the vinegar mixture over the hot rice and using a spatula gently fold the mixture until it's evenly distributed. Let it cool down.
To assemble the sushi rolls, place one sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat with the rough side facing up.
Using wet hands, take a small handful of rice and spread it over the nori, leaving a 1/2 inch border at the top.
Place your filling ingredients of choice horizontally at the bottom of the rice covered nori sheet.
Roll the mat and sushi roll tightly to seal the roll and press the seam to seal it.
Use a sharp knife to slice the sushi roll into bite-size pieces.
Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger on the side, and enjoy your homemade sushi!
Note: the fillings options for sushi rolls are endless, you can use any combination of ingredients you like. Some popular options include raw fish like salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. You can also use cooked meats like shrimp, crab, or even cooked chicken or tofu as a vegetarian option. Feel free to get creative with your filling choices, you can add avocado, cucumber, carrot, or even mango or strawberry for a sweet sushi roll.
