The destructive power of these weapons will be determined mostly by the type of terrain they are striking. If a marshy or sandy area with deep topsoil (like Louisiana or Florida in US) were to be targeted then you can imagine a shallow crater would form on the surface but most of the energy would be spent below ground and the rod would just burrow itself hundreds of feet deep.
