Over the years, there have been many changes to the displays on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP. Let's take a look and compare the 2 different displays from Nintendo, the AGS-001 & AGS-101 models, plus check out a 3rd party IPS display in a modified GBA SP we got from Handheld Legend.

AGS-001
This was the original GBA SP, and it was awesome at the time. taking what we loved about the Game Boy Advance and optimized the ergonomics to be an amazingly comfortable hand held. While an improvement in almost every way, the display on the original GBA SP was side lit, not back lit, which wasn't the greatest.

AGS-101
This was a refinement from Nintendo that was a huge improvement. Gone was the side lit display, now featuring a proper Backlit display. This made gameplay so much better with improved color, viewing Angles, and performance. It did reduce battery life a little bit, but Nintendo added an option to turn the backlight down to save some battery.

IPS Mod
In recent years, many companies have come out with enhanced screens for many Game Boy models, including the GBA SP. These are amazingly bright and vibrant screens, but their installation does require you to open the system to swap out components. While no soldering is required, if you want to change the brightness level you will need to solder 1 wire from the PCB to a pad on a ribbon cable.
