So now we're nearing the end of the 1960s. The machine influences the party machines that you describe because it's changing in form. It's changing in the way that it needs to appeal to people. and it creates a kind of area you describe as an activist class. And then an activist class machine replaces it. Who are they? How do you define that class? yeah. so this is the rise of the Emmas and Tims of the world for better and For Worse. right. So this is a professor, the college-educated folks who as described by some really suited servers at the time stand in for this new type of polka actor who instead of like the machine-oriented partisan operatives of your who cared about patronage and want to win elections because that was a direct way to power. These folks care more about causes. you know they've gone to school they've learned to believe in things. and they've learned to believe that American politics could be a vehicle for that type of transformation. and there's a lot to admire about that but as exemplified by the fact that this is I you know the class that you and I are both parts of. But a problem that emerges over time is that on both the left and the right there's a democratic version of this and the Republican version of this where those activist classes which I really do think start out with the best of intentions become a new type of establishment of their own. and this is something that you know I live outside Washington DC I teach at GW and see it every day. if you're in New York there's its own version of this. a sort of permanent activist establishment that needs to get monies from money from donors to stay alive but doesn't need to win elections in the same way. and you can have this sort of unmooring from what the rest of the country thinks because you're off in your world where it's you know maybe the five to ten percent of the population that treats Politics as a hobby and doesn't have the same type of skin in the game as earlier political groups did.
