Ukraine will be initiating an international effort to bar Russian competitors from participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He firmly rejected the notion of Russian athletes competing as part of a neutral team, claiming that the flag would be “tainted by blood”. The Russian government responded to the proposed boycott, asserting that any attempt to exclude them from the international sports arena is “fated to fail”. Nevertheless, this Olympic boycott has been put forward in order to demonstrate Ukraine’s condemnation of Russia’s “continued occupation of Crimea, its aggression in eastern Ukraine, and its human rights violations”, according to Zelenskyy. As such, Ukraine is calling on the International Olympic Committee to consider the “moral consequences” of permitting Russia to take part in the Olympics, as they argue that it would be a “slap in the face” to the victims of Russian aggression.
